Athenian Column Krater with Amazons
450 BC
Purchased from Graham Geddes Antiques and Antiquities, Armidale with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

This 5th century column krater (wine mixing bowl) was acquired with funds from a generous donation by the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

The vase is a beautiful example of the classical Athenian red-figure style pottery, showcasing the immense skills and craftsmanship of both potters and painters in this period. The vase is said to be in the manner of the Naples Painter who worked in the middle of the 5th century and specialised in large vases, including kraters. The main figural scene depicts a battle between the Greeks and the Amazons (called and amazonomachy), with the mythical Athenian hero and king, Theseus, taking centre stage. Kraters were used to mix together wine and water at Greek symposia (drinking parties).
