Gnathian Skyphos with Mask by the Rose Painter
c. 330 BC
Purchased from Holland Coins and Antiquities Ltd, California, with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

A fine example of Apulian Gnathian ware, this skyphos (cup) was purchased with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

The skyphos is attributed to the circle of the Rose Painter by Prof. J.R. Green. The Rose Painter is well known for framing objects or masks with vertical and horizontal sprays of foliage. The decoration is typical of Gnathian style pottery, using added yellow, red and white slip to create floral patterns over a black slipped body.
