Laconian Kylix with Ducks
625-575 BC
Purchased from Charles Ede Ltd, London, with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

This kind of Laconian (Spartan) pottery is uncommon, making this kylix (drinking cup) decorated with ducks a valuable addition to the Museum collection, purchased with funds donated by the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland in 1979.

The decoration is completed in a black slip and features geometric patterns around a main frieze of stylised waterbirds, perhaps ducks. Laconian ceramics were produced from the Geometric period (c. 900-700 BC), but this example comes from the Archaic period (after 700 BC) when new designs were being added to the painter's repertoire.
