Athenian Funerary Loutrophoros for Phanodemos
400-375 BC
Purchased from Sotheby & Co., London with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland donated by Mrs B Fletcher on the occasion of The University of Queensland’s 75th Anniversary.

This fragment of a marble funerary loutrophoros (water carrier) was a purchased by the Antiquities Museum with a special donation from Mrs Betty Fletcher to the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland, to mark the 75th anniversary of The University of Queensland.

The vase is a fine example of the funerary art of Athens during the period following the Peloponnesian War. The relief scene shows a family in mourning and an inscription recalls "Phanodemos, son of Paramonos, of the deme (voting district) of Aithalidai."

Phanodemos was an Athenian citizen and a gravestone for a relative, Paramonos, the son of Phanodemos, of the deme of Aithalidai, is also known from Athens.
