Roman Altar for Jupiter
AD 100-200
Purchased from Charles Ede Ltd, London, with funds from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

The purchase of this Roman sandstone altar was made possible by a donation from the Alumni Association of The University of Queensland.

The altar is dedicated to the worship of the Roman god Jupiter, here named as Jupiter Optimus Maximus (Jupiter Best and Greatest).  The altar is said to have been discovered at Carnuntum in the Roman province of Pannonia Superior (near Vienna in modern Austria) and was set up by one Valerius Maximus.

The full inscription reads:

Sacred to Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Valerius Maximus paid his vow, gladly, willingly, deservedly.
