Athenian Gravestone for Theophile
400-350 BC
Purchased from Charles Ede Ltd, London, with funds from the Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland, the Friends of Antiquity, Mr J Ede, the RD Milns Classics and Ancient History Perpetual Endowment Fund, Drs V & H Osiecki, and other generous contributions on the occasion of the Antiquities Museum’s 50th Anniversary.

The purchase of this important Athenian gravestone to mark the Museum's 50th Anniversary in 2013 was made possible by generous donations from the Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland, the Friends of Antiquity, Mr J Ede, the RD Milns Classics and Ancient History Perpetual Endowment Fund, Drs V & H Osiecki, and other contributors. 

The gravestone was set up in the Piraeus Necropolis, just outside of Athens, and records the virtues of a woman by the name of Theophile. The inscription reads:

Records of your virtue, Theophile, will never pass unnoticed, modest and excellent and industrious, possessing every virtue.
