Galilee as a Power Problem, c. 1936-1937

In his letters The Changing Holy Land and Galilee as a Power Problem, Iliffe spoke of the environmental damage to foreshores of the Sea of Galilee from ‘intense modernisation and industrialisation’. The new power station affected not only Capernaum, but also the Upper Jordan Valley. At Samakh (bottom photograph), the dramatic drop in water levels was ‘regarded as desecration of a sacred site’.
