Jericho Jane, 1936

During the British-led Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1917-18), General Allenby defeated the Ottomans, progressing from Gaza, through Jerusalem, to Megiddo. ‘Jericho Jane’, a German navel gun captured by an Australian Light Horse Unit in 1918, caught the attention of Iliffe. The gun, now stuck in a riverbank, served as a reminder to passers-by of the ‘last hasty’ Ottoman retreat. Published in Weekly Illustrated, January 1937.
