New Police Posts in Palestine, 1936-1937

The Mandate Government encouraged the creation of public services and utilities, and the development of Palestine’s natural resources. The top photograph shows the new ‘Robber’s Valley’ police post, north of Jerusalem. While improving security in the area, Iliffe comments that the colour and design of the new police-post buildings was ‘evidence of taste not always displayed by governments in their public buildings’, one example of the ‘hundreds of ways in which the centuries-old face of Biblical Palestine is being transformed and modernised in the present age.’
