Raqqa, Syria, 1935

In 1935, Iliffe travelled extensively around Syria, visiting various archaeological sites, including the 8th century Abbasid remains at Rakka (Raqqa) in Syria. Like Palestine, Syria was controlled by a Mandate Government between 1923 and 1946. The League of Nations had awarded France the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon.
