Title
Lekythos with Chariot Scene
Subject
TERRACOTTA
Description
An Athenian lekythos (oil flask) decorated in the black-figure style with a chariot scene.
A woman, perhaps a meanad, mounts a chariot drawn by four hourses. Her face is picked out in white, and her himation (cloak) is embellished in maroon. In front of her, a second woman tends to the horses, and behind, a third woman holds vine sprays, signalling a procession dedicated to Dionysos. At the head of the group, a fourth woman is seated in a klismos (chair), looking back at her companions.
Such scenes would have been common in ancient Athens, which held frequent public festivals.
