Description

The ring component of this bronze ring-key (similar to Giraud Type 5d) has a nearly circular hoop formed from a 5mm wide, flat band (it is slightly pushed out of shape on one side). The key element is made from a rectangular piece of bronze (17 x 9mm) that projects at right angles to the hoop. It is set on a 'bezel' or thickened area of the hoop that is rectangular in shape with slightly rounded ends, nearly flat on its upper surface and continuous with the circular hoop underneath. Small shoulders mark the junction of this bezel and the outer surface of the hoop and there is another notch and small ridge on the hoop below the bezel, to the left of the key element which is notched and resembles and "E" when viewed from below (i.e. with the ring projecting towards the viewer). A short rectangular strut connects the base of the "E" to the top of the bezel. There is a small notch on the right and a deeper notch on the left. Viewing the key element in profile, it can be seen that the upper two arms of the "E" are nearly twice as thick (5mm) as the other arm (3mm) so there is a rectangular step at the back of the "E" (on the side of the key that is oppostie the ring). Deep crosses are incised in the ends of the free arms of the key. The piece is in very good condition with a light green patina. Function: The key element was used to lock and unlock the rotary lock of a small container sucha s a chest or casket in which precious goods could be stored. Incorporating such a key into a ring enhanced security since the key could be worn constantly, reducing the chance of loss or theft (although this example could only have been worn on a small finger).
