Title

Earring with Goose

Subject

Gold

Description

A finely crafted gold hoop earring feturing a goose. Empty loops above the goose's head would have once housed gemstones of some kind. The ring has been restored and is made from hollow sheet gold crafted to a tapering point at one end and a loop clasp at the other. The goose stands on a small, two tiered, hollow pedestal which is separate to the earring. The goose itself is decorated with filligree and granulation in the form of rosettes, tongues and chevrons, and is also made of sheet gold. The mouth is separate. The casings for the gems are also bordered with granulation and the top piece is decorated with a floral pattern including a large rosette flanked with two smaller ones. Closest to Higgins Hellenistic Earring Type 2D but generally similar to others of type 2 which date to the mid to late hellenistic periods.
