Description

Bronze open-work military baldric phalera depicting an armed figure of Mars between two Roman trophies of captured armaments. The god of war is shown facing left wearing a high-crested helmet, full armor (lorica) on the torso over a short tunic and boots. His right arm is bent upward holding onto a long lance while the left is at his side bearing his ovoid shield. Details of the deity's face, as well as musculature and folds in his garments are picked out with incision. The flat backside of the phalera is complete with suspension loop. Highly important military type.
